Former prime minister and veteran Congress leader Manmohan Singh have tested positive for Covid-19. He has been admitted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Delhi on Monday.
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal wished former PM Manmohan Singh a speedy recovery.
“Dear Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji, Wishing you a speedy recovery. India needs your guidance and advice in this difficult time,” Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet.
“I wish the former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh ji good health and early recovery,” CM Kejriwal said.
Earlier on Sunday, Singh has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi stressing on the need to ramp up the vaccination process, Singh stated that one must not look at absolute numbers but the total percentage of population vaccinated.
“The key to our fight against COVID-19 must be ramping up the vaccination effort. We must resist the temptation to look at the absolute numbers being vaccinated, and focus instead on the percentage of the population vaccinated,” he said in his letter.
Noting that India currently has vaccinated only a small fraction of its population, Singh said he is certain that with the right policy design, “we can do much better and very quickly”.
Singh listed out suggestions for consideration ‘in a spirit of constructive cooperation’, that included publicizing firm orders for doses placed on different vaccine producers and allowing states more flexibility to plan vaccination roll-outs.
Meanwhile, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan responded to the former PM’s letter to PM Modi over the COVID-19 situation in the country today and alleged that Congress-ruled slate governments were engaged in spreading doubts regarding the efficacy of the vaccines, thereby playing with the lives of the countrymen.
Harsh Vardhan said history shall be kinder to him if his offer and valuable advice was followed by his party members.
