Former Assam chief minister Dr Bhumidhar Barman breathed his last at a hospital in Guwahati today.
As per reports, the senior Congress leader was admitted to the Dispur Hospital following prolonged illness.
The 90-year-old Congressman held the CM’s chair twice. Once for a brief period between April 22, 1996 and May 14, 1996, after the death of then CM Hiteshwar Saikia. He held the post again in 2010, when the then CM Tarun Gogoi was on leave on medical grounds.
Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma took to Twitter to express their condolences.
Reportedly, the Assam government has declared a three-day state mourning as a mark of respect to the former Chief Minister who passed away on Sunday evening. The mortal remains of Barman will be cremated with full state honour on Tuesday in his hometown Belsar, Nalbari.
